Welcome to the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Open Thread!

Miss Fisher stands with arms extended, hands resting on a large rope in front of her (a boxing ring). Text reads Open Thread.

(Thanks to [personal profile] cyborganize for the graphic!)

So many friends are watching Miss Fisher, [personal profile] tellitslant and I thought it might be nice to start a new (public) open thread.

Because --

* twitter is too short.

* tumblr is difficult (for some) to archive/track.

* it'd be fun to have my friends talk with each other about MFMM.

* I want to meet your MFMM fandom friends too.

Couple quick notes:

* don't be shy about using comment subject lines. If past is precedent, MFMM conversations can be sprawling and subject lines will help everyone.

* please tag S3 spoilers in your comment subject line.

* please post anything you find on S3! that one video is great but not enough. :D

* it probably doesn't need to be said? but, no character-bashing or ship-bashing. Be respectful of different fanons.

Post away!

Yes! I think the show has that same issue, A LOT. In almost all cases it's visibly TRYING when it deals with race overtly, and it's certainly willing to play fast and loose with period in terms of gender or sex or etc. But I keep wrestling with its kimono problems: this mostly subtle obliviousness that's half 1920s ambiance and half today's Australia. But which half?? I don't want to NOT look at the show's racist gestures, but the more I DO the more I SEE, and that's dismaying. And don't get me started on Phryne's fetishistic whiteness (that's perhaps more of a fanfic issue)...

I really appreciate your read (heh) on the books - thanks for being our collective guinea pig!

I think the fetishistic whiteness is a fan fiction issue by fans who read the books and so saw Phryne's amazing, pure, alabaster skin mentioned 500 times, and about 600 and counting mentions of how Phryne looks like a perfect Chinese beauty (moreso, naturally, than actual Chinese women. Like Lin's wife, who is conveniently voiceless on the matter of her husband carrying on a very public affair with Phryne, and constantly running off and abandoning her to travel with Phryne.) but with round eyes. The kimonos are also from the books.

As far as the show goes, while I'm sure part of the casting was that Essie does have the complexion described in the books (and Greenwood actually does do the "flawless white skin" bit in an interview in the first season DVDs) I don't feel the show itself goes out of its way to emphasize it. Certainly not to the degree of the books, at least.
