metatxtTHANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Festividder for both making me a vid *and* being so patient waiting for this letter. I am *AFLAIL* with these fandoms and I am very excited to receive a vid for any of these which are so woefully under-vidded.
I like a lot of information and squee in a dear vidder letter. I'm pretty flexible with most things, so if you do have a preexisting idea that you are eager to explore that you think I may like, feel free to just jump in.
AUDIO: I tend to find new music through vids and I also often appreciate music I would not otherwise be interested in if it is right for the vid. Lately I’ve been listening to Hayley Kiyoko, Janelle Monàe, Lizzo, Stevie Nicks, and 80s classics. In general, I prefer female vocalists. If you’re looking for music for femslash ships, I highly recommend checking out sapphic-playlists.tumblr.com. I am also a fan of alternative audio tracks and remix, so if you want to vid a stand-up comedy bit or a Broadway musical track or just something super weird, go for it!
As noted in previous letters, please refrain from vidding artists who have been accused of sexual violence or that are rapey like “Blurred Lines” or “My Way,” for example.
TRIGGERS: really specific and really uncommon, but fast edits on fast motion with scenes that have high contrast or different contrast. So essentially: motion within strobing rapid cuts. If you have questions about this you can reach out to mods and I’ll try to clarify further, but honestly 95% of fast edits and strobing are OK for me.
WARNINGS: I like warnings. They help people access vids.
VID STYLES: I'm here for all* of it! LKBV, deadly-serious crack vids, dance vids, character studies, super earnest "I would die for you" ship vids, etc. I just really want a vid with positive feels (or angst with humor).
THE WORST WITCH (26 x 30m)
This is the fandom I am most actively in right now and I fell and fell haaaard. A lot of this request is really “I wanna see what you would make!” and “I don’t have a vid song for this thing that I really really really want.” Here are a few ideas I have floating around:
I would absolutely love a vid about Mildred and HB’s relationship. In general, I have a lot of mentorship feels, a lot of ADHD in school feels, and the complexity of their dynamic is just so fascinating and captivating. HB has such tenderness for Mildred in these moments of overwhelming crisis where HB is herself scared, and yet, it is also so inaccessible during their day-to-day.
I would also be really into a vid about HB’s joy in terrorizing children. I feel like even though we know that sometimes she just loses all chill and is truly mean, most of the time it is used to keep them on task or out of trouble. In a meta sense, I just thoroughly enjoy Raquel Cassidy being so inappropriate as Hardbroom. She whispers at them so seductively! There’s this real sense of dualism where it’s terrifying for the kids in the diegesis, but totally read differently for/by the adults watching.
Relatedly, a vid about how HB is just fucking EXTRA all the time would also be amazing. Show me the queen who inspires drag queens!
I would really super dig a vid about HB thirsting over every female character on the show or all of the female characters thirsting after HB. We all know HB is queen lesbian of the show -- which is a feat since The Worst Witch is powered by lesbians and baby!gays.
Here’s where I should probably say I am very much not a Hackle shipper. I have a lot of friends who are Hackle shippers and I get what you all are seeing, but I just don’t see it in that way at alllllllllll. Hackle is welcome in equal measure in a vid about everyone thirsting for HB or HB thirsting for every female teacher though.
That said, I am completely devastated and a mess for Hicsqueak. My partner and I were HB and Pippa for Halloween. I would totally be thrilled with a Hicsqueak vid, however I am also vidding Hicsqueak, so if this is not your primary jam do not feel required to go this direction! I am also really into Mombroom (with their very little footage, yikes) enjoy Starbroom (although I think HB/Dimity has a pretty sibling-y vibe), and I love the the HB/Miss Mould sass-off throughout S2.
As an important aside, I am squicked by underage ships or student/teacher ships for this show.
THE EXPANSE (36 x 43m)
There are so many things I love about the Expanse and all of them are women! I would absolutely adore a character-study vid about Chrisjen Avasarala, Bobbie Draper, Naomi Nagata and/or Camina Drummer. Relatedly, I would absolutely FLIP for a vid about the femslash. I would be over the moon for a vid about Chrisjen Avasarala trying to pursue peace and protect Earth. Or even a call-out vid about any or all of these women fighting the motherfucking patriarchy and war-machine.
I wish I had more words here but they are all just FLAIL. My inability to articulate or extrapolate is just me short-circuiting due to the sheer abundance. There are so very many vids I need for the Expanse and really it is hard to go wrong here.
To share added context for my appreciation of the show: I also love Amos and Alex a whole lot. I am not terribly interested in Holden or Miller. Additionally, the proto-molecule is scary as fuck and I am fascinated with how it functions as a catalyst in the larger cosmo-politics and sci-fi narrative.
MADAM SECRETARY (94 x 44m) *NOTE: one of the characters I’m requesting has only been around ½ a season
I am obsessed with Madam Secretary's reactions, faces, forearms (omg the forearm porn is out of control), and shippiness with a very butch Sara Ramirez, aka Kat Sandoval. Show me Elizabeth McCord pwning on the world stage. Show me the delicate and tireless work of statecraft. Honestly just throw in words like statecraft or tradecraft in big letters random places and I’ll swoon, because I am trash for her and her work. Make a femslash vid with Elizabeth/Kat and you only need to clip half a season of source!
I also really love her relationship with Ally, in particular. There’s this added sweetness to their mom-daughter dynamic in that they are so different and Elizabeth really works hard to connect with Ally and support her interests. Somehow the labor that Elizabeth goes through to be the parent Ally deserves makes their parent-child relationship way more compelling to me than that of Stevie or Jason.
I completely dig Elizabeth/Henry, but I am not interested in a vid about them, unless it is a poly-ship vid. I am totally down with a poly-ship vid as long as Russell and Conrad do not make an appearance; they squick me.
I love the rest of the staff to pieces but honestly, I’m mainly here for Elizabeth McCord, her faces, her reactions, her forearms, her language, her competence, and her relationships.
DIRTY COMPUTER (46 m)
This emotion picture has my heart. I just. I don’t think there’s a bad direction here. Vid your heart out. Choose the vid that makes you feel excited. I will watch the hell out of literally any Dirty Computer vid and be in awe. The complex feminist politic of Janelle Monàe is a Big Mood. Here are some ideas though, again, run with what inspires you? OT3 vid. Janelle/Tessa vid. Vid celebrating their dirt.
Awhile back, I was really interested in a vid that ties her Cindi Mayweather albums and universe to her musical influences and to her science fiction influences (I know this is totally a big ask). Although Dirty Computer is not so much a Cindi Mayweather character-piece, but a Jane character piece, the musical influences and science fiction influences are stronger than ever. I would love a vid that explores Dirty Computer in the context of Janelle Monàe’s influences, in music or science fiction. I’d also add that fidelity to any documented list of Janelle Monaé’s SF/F influences is not quite as important as placing her work within the larger feminist sci-fi canon.
Finally, I love how this universe interrogates questions of personhood and citizenship through the lens of cyborgs and Afro-futurism to reflect on issues surrounding race, class, sexuality and gender. I love the thematic through-lines of love, sex, music and rhythm as modalities of resistance.
DESERT HEARTS (96 m)
Last time I fell deep into this book/movie I feel like I was practically incoherent in my flails. This narrative just cuts so deep! I love the pacing and rumination throughout the film and book. I love these quiet moments where they watch each other, enjoy the expanse of the desert and reflect on life and choices and compulsory heterosexuality.
One of the things I love the most about Cay and Vivian’s romance is that Vivian’s coming out story isn’t entirely about Cay. Despite Cay’s very large role in Vivian’s growing awareness of her own sexuality and desires, Cay is not the inciting factor. Vivian’s awareness arises from her feelings of failure as a wife. Every time she talks or thinks about her shame, I just want to hug her and tell her there’s nothing wrong with being a failed heterosexual. Moving to the desert to obtain a divorce thing she’s done to try and live more honestly and that is what opens the door for Cay. I really feel like the desert is this third relationship component that allows them to connect, and that’s an important part of their relationship for me. So I guess, I’m requesting Vivian/Cay/desert ship vid??
THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS (112 m)
If you have not seen this movie, and unless we matched here (woo!) I am assuming you have not, it's a tale of a very rebellious teen girl, named Mary Clancy (Hayley Mills) who gets into all sorts of trouble with her best friend Rachel while they live at a Catholic boarding school. The movie has no obvious plot but is more a series of vignettes that are only held together by Mary's evolving relationship and dynamic with disciplinarian and headmistress, Mother Superior (Rosalind Russell). The movie was written and directed by a woman (Ida Lupino) and has a cameo from the real Gypsy Rose Lee! Femslash subtext runs through every layer, from Mary/Rachel, Mary/her-cousin-who-hates-her-Marvel-Anne, to Mary/Mother Superior (the heart of it all, tbh!) and the actual factual canon Mother Superior/Sister Lagourie femslash ship, The Trouble With Angels is about as femslashtastic as you can get.
I would adore a vid about Mary, Mother Superior, their relationship (shippy, maternal, shippy-AND-maternal, platonic, or w/e), or just the lady vibe of the whole damn movie. There are MANY hijinks and despite (or because of) the light plotting it is incredibly vidable.
BROAD CITY (40 x 22m)
Abbi and Ilana, my loves. UGH. These fierce queens. Ship vid? yasss queen. Character study, general fun party vid, omg yass. A few notes on boys: Bevers is groce. Trey is kinda sweet but also really icky. Lincoln is a babe. Jaime is adorable.
Obvs I need an Abbi/Ilana ship vid like burning, but I also need ALL of the Broad City vids this world has to offer. I would also enjoy a vid about their constant hustle, both within their careers and on the side. Abbi and Ilana connect to a lot of my feelings about the impossibilities within late-stage capitalism. I really fucking love their passionate and casual commitment to organized politics, not to mention the contractions and layers of their feminist ideals and actions.
Of course, if you love them like I love them and you have an idea you’re excited about, just run with it!
THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL (8 x 53m)
*sigh* This show is so, so good and I am just SO excited for S2. If you want to make a S1 standalone vid, by all means. If you have interest in vidding S1 and S2 after it comes out in November, go for it, I will be caught up. But both season seem like distinct chapters, so I feel like a S1 vid would be super relevant even after S2 is released!!
I don’t even know where to start. I adore Midge. I love how she goes from 0 to 60 with her wants and desires after Joel is such a dirtbag. I love how she decides to be uncompromising for who she is, what she has to offer, and what she wants. I am so HERE for Midge and her comedy dreams, her feminist consciousness, and just growing into herself. A character study of Midge would be phenomenal.
Of couuuurse, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t ship Midge and Susie. Just. Dang. What can I say. I love the constant tension of being vulnerable and brave and calling each other out and trying to protect themselves and building trust as they go down this challenging road together. Midge/Susie ship vid would be very, very welcome.
I am not a fan of Joel. He is irredeemable for me. I would not want a Midge/Joel vid.
I really love Abe. And I love the way the show is infused with specifically Jewish traditions of humor and wit throughout, not just in Midge’s routines. The scene in the synagogue re: questioning is the funniest thing I’ve seen in ages.
